Mayor daughter among 12 killed in southern Philippines ambush

MANILA, PHILIPPINES  — At least twelve people were killed, including the mayor daughters, after gunmen ambushed a convoy in the southern Philippines, local authorities said Friday.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening, shortly after 5 p.m. local time in Iligan City, located in Lanao del Norte in the Northern Mindanao region., when a group of unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy.

Senior Superintendent Gerardo Rosales, Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office chief, confirmed the incident, stating that the target of the attack was Nunungan Mayor Abdulmalik Manamparan, the Philippine Star reported.

Althouh the mayor, along with the driver and a police escort, survived the incident and only suffered injuries, the mayor's daughter, Adnani, 30, was killed. In total, the death toll was placed at twelve.

Troops and security forces were deployed to the region in order to prevent further conflicts to break out. Nonetheless, authorities believe the attack was led by Kadie Hamin, who is a strong rival of the mayor and leads a clan in the Barangay Kaludan area.
