MELBOURNE City Council spends almost $600,000 a year of ratepayers' funds on memberships for a range of professional and lobby groups, it has been revealed.
The biggest outlay in 2012-13 was $75,000 for the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors, while the council stumped up $33,000 for the Municipal Association of Victoria after recently re-joining the council lobby group.
Other signicant membership costs included almost $40,000 to the Victorian Local Government Association and $30,000 for Inner Melbourne Action Plan – a coalition of five inner city councils.
The city council also supported climate change lobby the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action with a $20,000 fee and coughed up $12,000 for membership of Melbourne University's Asialink, according to a register of council memberships.
