  OVERVIEW

Many city leaders agree ; energy efficiency has become one of the most important issues they have to deal with. In more and more cities across the United States and even the world, the energy needs of populations are constantly increasing. According to experts, demand will be even stronger in the years and decades to come, due to amongst other things intense economic activities, industrialization and rising living standards particularly for people living in big cities. How then to meet these pressing and future demands for energy without endangering the environment and therefore the future of our planet? This is one of the main questions that has emerged today and one to which many cities and municipalities are beginning to find an initial response through diversification of energy sources. For many of these cities and municipalities the solution could come from renewable energies : solar, wind, hydropower, biomass, geothermal and others.

In such a perspective and beyond the initiatives taken at the state and national government level, the direct involvement of mayors in the process of integration or implementation of renewable energy policy within their municipality has thus become essential.

However, for many mayors and municipal development actors, the concept of renewable energy remains a concept that is not only new but also complex. They must therefore master it in order to better understand or carry out any projects related to renewable energy in their municipality.

The seminar on “Cities & Energy Efficiency: Facing and overcoming the challenges  of renewable energy” should thus help in gaining this mastery and understanding.
