Sam Adams travels to Asia to promote and grow Portland businesses

CITY OF PORTLAND ,OREGON — This afternoon, Mayor Sam Adams departed on a 10-day trip to Shanghai, Suzhou, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. While overseas, he will be joined by a consortium of Portland and Oregon clean tech companies, representatives from the Port of Portland, and representatives of Business Oregon, the state’s economic development agency. The aim of the trip is to promote Portland’s new clean tech export initiative, “We Build Green Cities,” recruit new investment for Portland, and support the growth of Portland business overseas.

In Shanghai, Mayor Adams will participate in an EB5 investment meeting, seeking additional investment in the Portland area. In Hong Kong, the mayor will meet with Google, Microsoft, and IBM, along with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Assistant Administrator Malcolm Jackson, to discuss Environmental IT. In Suzhou, the mayor will be participating in a roundtable discussion on low carbon planning, hosted by the Institute for Sustainable Communities.

Mayor Adams will also attend several events at Hong Kong’s Eco Expo Asia’11, promoting Portland and Oregon’s clean tech businesses. Previous business promotion trips like this, including last year’s visit to Toronto, have led to increased business for clean tech companies like Portland’s Columbia Green ecoroof firm.

Mayor Adams will also be making important cultural stops. On the first leg of his trip, Portland Suzhou Sister City Association leaders will join the Mayor. In Tokyo, the Mayor–alongside representatives of the Portland Japanese Garden–will speak at a fundraiser in support of Portland Japanese Garden Expansion, hosted by US Ambassador John Roos, renowned architect Kengo Kuma, and others.
