WASHINGTON,DC — National League of Cities (NLC) President Marie Lopez Rogers, mayor, Avondale, AZ  was honored to attend the President’s immigration remarks today at the White House and released the following statement:

“Watching the President give his remarks today reinforced that we are at a critical point in our country’s history to pass comprehensive immigration reform. City leaders across the nation appreciate the President’s vocal support of this issue, and echo his calls today to Congress.

“For true reform to take place—and to fix our current broken system—we need the strongest, most comprehensive bill possible.  As the Senate begins deliberating the legislation this week, we urge them to maintain provisions that: fortify border security and enforcement; create a pathway to earned citizenship; and modernizes the legal immigration system to attract skilled workers.

“Most importantly, cities and towns will be on the front lines of any new immigration system. We urge our members of Congress to pass legislation that includes the necessary resources for cities to implement the new law.  As the debate continues on Capitol Hill, we will continue to support comprehensive immigration reform that creates a more vibrant, diverse nation.

“Ellis Island was a beginning for many; let us look to the future by expanding opportunities for a new generation of immigrants.”

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
