ISTANBUL (AA) – Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge on Sunday broke his own world record in the Berlin Marathon.

“I am overjoyed to have broken the world record in Berlin. I wanted to run the first half so fast,” he said after the race.

Kipchoge, 37, crowned the 48th edition of the marathon with a world record of two hours, one minute and 10 seconds. He beat his own best time, which he achieved in Berlin in 2018, by exactly half a minute.

His countryman Mark Korir finished in second place with 2:05:58, with Tadu Abate of Ethiopia third with 2:06:28.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa won the race with a time of 2:15:37.

Second-place Rosemary Wanjiru of Kenya finished with 2.18.00 while third-place Tigist Abayechew of Ethiopia trailed three seconds behind.
